a Real Hip Hop Documentary Over a six-month time span, Kamala and Nysis developed a trusting professional relationship, and she was granted access to film his friends, family, home, and personal and professional life gaining a unique perspective with which to observe the social, cultural and professional influences affecting him. Kamala began capturing those influences, recording with digital video, using a minimalist aesthetic including natural lighting, shooting in the street or car to capture the space of Nysis’s environment and surroundings, and through dialogue about his childhood, and past and present circumstances. The project’s style reflects the rawness associated with “real” or authentic Hip Hop and reveals an intimate look at what it really means to be a product of Hip Hop culture, while exploring the nearly impossible chance of becoming a Hip Hop star.
